Ellistown Primary School Parking Concerns

Today, I carried out a school parking patrol at Ellistown Primary School following concerns raised by residents on Rushby Road, Ellistown regarding school-time parking.

Overall, it was very positive to see that the vast majority of parents and carers were parked considerately and in accordance with the regulations.

During the patrol, 5 Words of Advice (WOA) were issued. These vehicles were not causing an obstruction or preventing access for other road users, pedestrians, or residents, but some guidance was provided to help improve parking standards further. In addition, one driver was asked to move their vehicle, which they did happily and without issue, relocating to a more suitable parking space nearby.

One concern raised by a parent was vehicles parking on the yellow zig-zag markings outside the school. These markings are there to keep the area outside the school entrance clear, improving visibility for children crossing the road and helping to keep them safe. Parking on zig-zags can obstruct sightlines for both drivers and pedestrians, increasing the risk of a collision and putting children at unnecessary risk during busy drop-off and pick-up times.

I completely understand the frustration that school parking issues can cause for local residents, parents, and other road users. It is often a long-standing challenge faced by many school communities, and there is rarely a quick fix. However, the more we work together, communicate, and show consideration for one another, the more we can make the available space work for everyone.

By parking thoughtfully, allowing access to driveways and roads, and avoiding unnecessary obstructions, we can help keep children safe while also respecting the needs of the local community.
